how can I tell if my chess pieces are real ebony or ebonized wood, without taking them apart.?
They are weighted chess pieces and I was told they were genuine ebony, but want to be sure. Thanks
so a density test is the only way to tell?
I paid around 200 for it. The back knight seems heavier overall as oppose to the boxwood. More top heavy than the boxwood if that makes sense. thanks everyone!
Ebonized is a fancy way of saying the wood has been stained to look like Ebony. So the only way to know for sure is to check the wood for signs of staining. Look for brush marks or areas where there are signs of a much lighter wood showing through. You can also find an area on the bottom of a piece and rub it a little with a paper towel to see if any black stain rubs off. The one sure way would be to scratch the bottom of one of the pieces to see if the wood remains dark through and through but that might be a little drastic.
